HOW do I stop my dog from jumping? Most jumping up on people is the dog's way of greeting. It is also the area from which verbal communications come; these airborne chemical communicators (pheromones) are another way dogs scent, but generally speaking, this in the dog's mind, is a way of being friendly and greeting. Most jumping problems have been unwittingly encouraged by the people around the dog (most owners turn to punishment as the first choice of correcting the unwanted behavior). We must now teach the dog another more socially acceptable way in which to greet us. We will teach him that a sit will get him positive attention where a jump will be met with a correction. The correct way to administer a collar correction is a quick downward snap on the dog's leash and at the same time, giving the "off" command. As soon as his paws hit the ground (sit position) positively reinforce this good behavior with praise and a few well-placed pats. Please remember that consistency is the key to correcting this unwanted behavior.
